That’s according to former Red Devils striker Dimitar Berbatov who has urged them to sign a Virgl van Dijk style commander.
United have conceded 50 goals in a Premier League campaign for the first time in the their history.
Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones have are Solskjaer’s main option in at he back.
But none have looked convincing while Manchester United have conceded nine goals without reply in their last three matches.
Liverpool, by contrast, have leaked just a miserly 20 goals as they hunt their first ever Premier League trophy.
Van Dijk galvanised the Reds defence when he arrived for a world record £75m fee last January.
And Berbatov has identified Matthijs de Ligt of Ajax as the new version of Van Dijk who can sort out United’s defence.
“Ole needs a centre-back who can control the ball, pass into midfield and not be intimidated — just like Van Dijk,” he told The Sun.
“If I am a striker with Van Dijk in my team, I know it will be OK. They need someone like that.”
And the striker, who won two Premier League titles at Old Trafford, reckons United must should battle Barcelona for 19-year-old defender De Ligt.
He continued: “For a player so young, De Ligt’s performances are incredible.
“He’s mature, comfortable on the ball, and he is not bothered who he plays against — Ronaldo or whoever.
“He doesn’t care, he just plays his own game. He moves with grace and doesn’t panic on the ball.
“He has everything you want from a defender. That guy will be an unbelievable player.
“He’s a great talent and I hope United go for him in the summer and get him.”
Manchester United welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford tomorrow as they look to put an end to their recent poor run of results.
