Bailly is likely to fly home from United’s pre-season tour after sustaining knee damage during the club’s 2-1 win over Tottenham today.
The centre-back went down just nine minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute at the Hongkou Stadium in Shanghai.
The Ivorian was playing in just his third game since undergoing a knee operation for medial ligament damage last season.
He was replaced by youngster Axel Tuanzebe, who could now find himself thrust into the limelight.
Prior to Bailly’s setback, United were unsure whether to send the 21-year-old out on loan again next season.
Tuanzebe spent last season with Aston Villa on a temporary basis and earned positive reviews by helping them to win promotion back to the top flight.
Solskjaer is still hopeful of agreeing a mega-money deal with Leicester for Harry Maguire, who he sees as the ideal partner for Victor Lindelof.
Chris Smalling and Phil Jones’ time at old Trafford could be coming to an end before too long, after a combined 17 years at the club.
And with the Norwegian manager pledging to give youth a chance during his tenure, Tuanzebe may now be handed the chance to show his worth.
The 21-year-old is a product of United’s famous academy and has been at United since the age of eight.
Earlier this month the defender penned a deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2022.
“I have grown up at Manchester United and it has always been a big part of my life and my family’s life,” Tuanzebe said.
“I appreciate the trust that the club has in me and I want to repay that with my performances on the pitch.
“I know I have a lot of hard work and learning ahead of me, but the experience I gained throughout last season puts me in good stead for the future ahead.
“I am determined to give everything and show everyone the player that I can be.
“I can’t wait for the tour to get started and to see what the upcoming season brings.”
