Manchester United have had themselves an extremely busy 24 hours. Victory in the derby was super sweet, with the Red Devils giving us some further good news this evening.
The club have confirmed that Tahith Chong has signed a new contract at Old Trafford, keeping him at the club until 2022.
Chong, who has featured for the first-team on multiple occasions this term, is looking to make that breakthrough into the squad with regularity after getting a taste of what it’s like to play for the biggest club in the country.
As you can see from the photo below, Chong was snapped, all-smiles, alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after putting pen to paper:
The deal does contain the option for a further year if United so choose, meaning Chong’s future is now secure until 2023, by which point the winger will be 23 and we’ll have a much clearer idea as to whether he has what it takes to make it at Old Trafford.
If I’m being honest, I’ve been underwhelmed with what Chong has brought to the table during his first-team chances. Yes, his talent is there for all to see and we’ve seen glimpses of what the attacker can offer.
However, it’s always tough translating that on the biggest stage. In time, as his opportunities continue to increase, perhaps we’ll start to see that more often. What’s clear is Chong is a cut above reserve-team football and perhaps the move is to send him out on loan next season.
