As fans of by far and away the biggest club in the country, we’ve developed high standards supporting Manchester United. These last few years, though, the level has dropped considerably.
I find it bizarre that with such an embarrassment of riches at the club’s disposal, some of these players who are starting with regularity is borderline shameful.
Now I know he gives his all, he tries hard and he once had a quality season for United, but Jesse Lingard just isn’t good enough to play for Manchester United – yet somehow, he’s starting in derby games in a system that doesn’t really suit him.
The sad thing is, it’s not his fault. We’ve seen what Lingard can do under a manager who gives him confidence and a licence to roam. Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it just isn’t working.
Yesterday the Warrington-born winger looked like a headless chicken for the most part, getting bullied by Kevin de Bruyne and the rest of that talented City midfield.
His first touch was bad, the passing was sloppy and Lingard was no longer making those defence-splitting runs – which is by far and away his biggest strength.
Anyway as you’d imagine, social media wasn’t too kind to Lingard in the aftermath as Man Utd fans raged at the 27-year-old’s woeful display vs City. The mad thing is, with the squad looking so thin, he’s probably firmly in contention to start against Norwich City this Saturday.
