Manchester United’s squad has been absolutely torn apart through injury all season long. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has effectively been working with one hand tied behind his back – especially due to key players being sidelined in the long-term.
Anyway, Solskjaer has seldom moaned nor kicked up a fuss. Instead, he’s just got on with it and tried to utilise the squad to it’s fullest. Although Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba are still sidelined in the long-term, the Baby Faced Assassin is seemingly close to getting some welcome relief…
Solskjaer met the media today and confirmed a big injury boost, with 25-year-old Eric Bailly ‘very close to full fitness’ following a knee injury that he picked up in a pre-season game over the summer.
“We’ll probably have a similar squad to what we had at the weekend against Norwich,” Ole told MUTV per the official ManUtd.com website. “Eric is playing today, behind closed doors, so he’s very close to full fitness, but it’s still a few days early, this one.”
It’s easy to forget just how good Bailly was during his debut season at Old Trafford. That term he was amongst the best defenders in the country – though injuries have absolutely derailed his career.
The question is now whether Bailly can remain fit. With a good run of football under his belt, let’s hope the Ivorian can put his injury problems behind him and rediscover that quality which we all know he has.
Personally, I see Bailly as the perfect partner for the cool, calm and collected Harry Maguire. He’s the Vidic to Maguire’s Rio if you will.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, it’s about allowing Bailly to get back to full speed in his own time. Even if it takes until next season, we need to remain patient because I still think there’s a player in there somewhere…
