Manchester United has always been a club willing to give young players a chance. Although that mantra has somewhat stopped over the last few years, it’s clear to me that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to bring it back.
You look at how youthful the pre-season tour squad is looking and it’s great to see academy products galore over in Australia playing a bit part.
Amongst those is Axel Tuanzebe. After an impressive loan spell with Aston Villa, the centre-half is getting the opportunity to prove his worth to the Baby Faced Assassin – and it looks like the 21-year-old is impressing judging by Solskjaer’s latest comments…
“Axel has got a great chance of staying here and playing,” Solskjaer told reporters, including ManUtd.com.
“He had a great season last year, albeit a stop-start season with injuries, but he’s really proven that he’s capable of playing at this level.
”He got promoted with Aston Villa and he’s come back very strong and focused. He did well in the first game here in Perth, so he’s one of the young exciting players I can’t wait to see more of.“
This is high praise indeed. I seriously hope that Tuanzebe continues to have an excellent tour because I’d much rather see minutes given to him over a Phil Jones or a Marcos Rojo.
Although Tuanzebe may not be as complete as the other two right now, the talent is there and at least he can grow and develop as a player.
Sure, mistakes will be made, but that’s all part-and-parcel of learning and improving. Plus, we’re used to seeing mistakes every other week from the current set of defenders so there’d be no change in that regard…
