All had gone quiet in regards to a new David de Gea contract at Manchester United, despite the signs feeling positive over the summer…
Well last night, in an exclusive, The Sun dropped an absolute bombshell on us. They say that the star 26-year-old has told friends he’s ready to reject United’s latest £350,000-a-week contract offer.
Furthermore, their headline states that he’s doing exactly that so he can leave for free next summer, while his Spain teammates believe De Gea’s running down his deal in order to speak to other clubs come January.
I think the signs began to feel rather negative for United when the club had to activate a one-year extension clause within his contract. To me, that felt like both parties were still significantly apart in terms of reaching agreement on a new long-term deal.
De Gea is now nine months away from being a free agent and it still feels like no positive progress has been made – which is mightily concerning.
I get the impression that De Gea has had enough of not winning trophies – which is fair enough given how good he is. For United, the concern is that his form has dropped off significantly over the last six months or so. Whether that’s due to his future being up in the air, or whether he’s on the decline remains to be seen.
Fortunately for United, they do have a top-quality player in Sergio Romero waiting in the wings, while Dean Henderson could well be ready to make that #1 jersey his own in the 2020/21 campaign…
