For Manchester United, defence has been a real problem over the last few years. Things came to a heed in the 2018/19 campaign when 54 league goals were conceded.
That led Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to begin a mass overhaul of the backline. £130million was spent acquiring Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Their abilities has already been on full display.
For the Baby Faced Assassin there is still much work ahead. Dead-wood like Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling remain at the club, while Eric Bailly constantly remains injured.
Well, according to the Daily Mirror, the talented 21-year-old Axel Tuanzebe is now United’s third-choice option in the key centre-back position. It shows the trust that Solskjaer is putting in youth while signalling the beginning of a new era.
It’s about time that the likes of Jones and Smalling were binned off. They’ve had so many chances and although Tuanzebe is still young and learning, while he will make mistakes, it just makes sense to give him his opportunity.
Although it’ll be tough to break into that Harry Maguire/Victor Lindelof partnership (injuries aside), there could be situations where United want to play a back three. Who knows, Solskjaer could look to match Wolverhampton Wanderers tonight and Tuanzebe may well get the start…
