Why Aubameyang and Lacazette decision left Arsenal legend 'frustrated' after Rennes win

That is the view of Gunners legend Martin Keown, who has revealed that his former club need to take a leaf out of Manchester United and Liverpool’s book.

Arsenal beat Rennes 3-0 on Thursday night to make it through to the Europa League quarter-finals with Aubameyang and Lacazette combining well all night.

Aubameyang netted twice while Lacazette, who had a suspension overturned in order to be able to play, provided the link up play in attack.

Ahead of Thursday’s clash, the pair had only been named alongside each other on 17 occasions this season.

Keown would prefer to see them start every match, copying the style of Liverpool and Manchester United.

Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford have regularly played alongside each other in recent weeks for United, with Liverpool’s attacking players almost set in stone in their side.

“There’s an awful lot more possibilities when you’ve got two strikers,” Keown said on BT Sport.

“They occupy basically four defenders.

“Over the years, the last 10 years or so, that’s not been then case.

“These two have got tremendous pace. They love playing with one another, there’s almost a telepathic link up with them.

“They look for one another and they can finish when they get the opportunities.

“I’ve almost been frustrated.

“Emery has been a little bit reluctant to play these two together.

“If you look at [Mohamed] Salah and [Sadio] Mane, you look at Lukaku and Rashford, this is sort of in vogue now.

“Your twin strikers, inside left, inside right, lots of pace.

“It’s really difficult and a nightmare now for central defenders, you’ve got to be really at your game.

“There’s none of this business of one up to anymore.

“Two strikers, but two strikers who can play and these two can do that for Arsenal.”
