Why Man Utd WON'T be signing Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic – it involves Paul Pogba

The Croatia international star had been seen as a solution in midfield if Paul Pogba were to leave.

Earlier this season, the World Cup winner looked increasingly likely to quit Old Trafford.

Under Jose Mourinho, Pogba’s performances were not up to his high standard set with France and Juventus, and their relationship had broken down.

The player’s brother even admitted he was prepared to go while Mourinho remained in charge.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival as Mourinho’s replacement following his December sacking has revitalised the 25-year-old.

Pogba’s been a pivotal figure in the middle of the park and his turnaround has now led to confidence at Old Trafford he won’t push for a move in the summer.

The Frenchman is settled working for Solskjaer, who wants to build a team around him next season if he is given the manager job permanently.

The news that Pogba is set to remain a United player comes as:

“Rakitic was viewed by the club as Pogba’s potential replacement”

With Pogba’s future seemingly secure in Manchester, it rules out any hope fans had of Rakitic arriving from the Nou Camp.

According to the London Evening Standard, United have cooled their interest in the 31-year-old three-time La Liga winner.

Rakitic was viewed by the club as Pogba’s potential replacement when they most feared earlier this term he would be off.

But Manchester United are said to be no longer considering alternatives as they don’t believe they will be forced to sell their £89m record signing.

The latest development has seen Solskjaer make it clear he will build his team around Pogba – a stark contrast to what Mourinho had planned.

Rakitic was looked at closely last summer, however, thoughts of a move have now fizzled.

The player’s future at Barcelona is under continued speculation, though, following the capture of Ajax sensation Frenkie de Jong ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Rakitic is determined to stay, the London Evening Standard add.

And even still, a host of Europe’s big sides are monitoring his situation, with Inter Milan apparently his preferred destination if he is pushed out of Barcelona.
