Manchester United have been locked in contract talks with several players over the last twelve months. Ander Herrera’s came with a negative ending, although the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have committed to new long-term deals.
Well, another positive outcome could be just on the horizon. The story comes from The Guardian, who state that the world-class 28-year-old, David de Gea, is ‘preparing’ to sign a new contract that will run till 2025.
Furthermore, The Guardian add that De Gea would also love to take on the United captaincy, who is yet to be named by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following Antonio Valencia’s departure.
“I’ve been captain for some games,” De Gea said per The Guardian. “Of course, it is amazing to be captain of a club like Manchester United and defend this badge. It’s amazing, so of course I’ll be really, really happy to captain.”
My list of potential captains is an extremely short one, but for me, De Gea sits at the top. He’s been the most consistent player over the last half-decade and I genuinely believe giving him the armband will provide the Spaniard with that ability to bark orders at his teammates more often.
For me, the other candidates include Paul Pogba and *possibly* Victor Lindelof. Ashley Young could get it due to his experience but I’d be disappointed if that’s the case.
First and foremost, I’m just delighted that De Gea is looking likely to put pen to paper on a new deal. We desperately need him and the sooner this fresh contract is announced the better it’ll be for the whole club.
