Sterling has joined up with the national squad ahead of their Euro 2020 qualifiers later this week.
Included in England’s squad was Borussia Dortmund’s teenage sensation Jadon Sancho.
The 18-year-old quit Manchester City for the Bundesliga last year, but Sterling joked about the likeliness of his return.
He tweeted: “So u actually have a buy back clause? #AgentRaz on duty.”
The City forward was quick to delete the tweet knowing the sort of stir it could cause.
But not before plenty of fans had caught wind of his comments.
Sancho has been a revelation since moving to Dortmund and has already been linked with a return to the Premier League.
In other Premier League news:
The teenager is reportedly a target for City’s rivals Manchester United.
Sterling’s tweet initially indicated that his side would have first refusal should he opt to return to England.
But the City player’s claims were clearly meant in jest.
Sancho earned his first England cap in October 2018 when he appeared against Croatia.
His consistent form has again seen him included in Gareth Southgate’s squad and he could feature over the next week.
England play the Czech Republic at Wembley on Friday night and then travel to Montenegro for their second qualifier on Monday night.
