Man Utd yet to trigger one-year extension in midfielder's contract, four months remaining on deal: report

It’s certainly no secret that Manchester United are currently in the middle of a major overhaul.

The Old Trafford outfit are definitely heading in the right direction under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though there is still much work ahead for the Baby Faced Assassin.

Amongst those players who I personally thought was done in Manchester is Nemanja Matic. But, credit where it’s due, he played some brilliant football in Scott McTominay’s injury absence.

Well, according to the Manchester Evening News, United are yet to trigger the one-year extension in the midfielder’s contract. Right now, Matic has four months remaining on his current deal, while being free to talk to overseas clubs about signing a pre-contract.

These one-year options have been pretty good for United recently. It helped keep David de Gea under contract while I don’t doubt the club will be activating Paul Pogba’s option in his. I’d be surprised if the Reds don’t trigger this for Matic, too, in order to protect his transfer value.

I guess it all comes down to whether there is sufficient interest in the Serb. Since the year’s turn, he has definitely shown that he still has what it takes to play at the highest level.

For me, I’d keep him around. Matic is the perfect rotational option for McTominay who is a slightly different kind of player. As a pairing, they’re a couple of good choices for Solskjaer to have…
