Club president Florentino Perez sanctioned the deal on the basis of his belief that goalkeeper Keylor Navas was not up to the task.
But news of the £35m transfer went down like a lead balloon in the Bernabeu dressing room.
Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos and co. were strongly in favour of retaining Navas as No.1 and strengthening alternative areas of the squad.
With Cristiano Ronaldo having departed for Juventus a month previous, recruiting a striker in the transfer window should have been the priority.
And according to Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda, Real’s stars wanted the signing of Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku.
“The Real Madrid players believed that signing a goalkeeper was not a priority last year,” he told OKDIARIO.
“Signing a striker was more important and they specifically hoped to see Romelu Lukaku arrive.
“Thibaut Courtois did not fit in with the squad whatsoever.
“They Real players are fiercely loyal to Keylor Navas.”
News of the Real Madrid players bemusement at the Courtois signing comes amid news of:
Real’s season went into a tailspin within weeks of announcing their replacement for Zinedine Zidane who quit after winning a third consecutive Champions League.
Julen Lopetegui was sacked after a crushing 5-1 El Clasico defeat by Barcelona after just four and a half months in charge at the Bernabeu.
Santiago Solari replaced him but he too was sacked despite winning 22 of his 32 games in the hot seat.
Now Zidane is back at the reins less than a year after walking away and is planning to raid Chelsea twice more.
Eden Hazard is well-known to be his priority, but Inda has revealed that the Frenchman wants to add yet another Blues star to take the place of Casemiro.
“Although he was key in the resurrection of Zidane’s first Madrid side, Zidane does not want Casemiro,” he said.
“He wants to sign N’Golo Kante.”
