Here at Old Trafford Faithful, we’ve been pretty busy covering the daily Jadon Sancho to Manchester United rumours.
Well, this latest update could effectively put an end to all that…
The story comes from the usually reliable Sky Sports News, who are today claiming that United ‘will not pay more than £50m’ to sign the superstar attacker, who is keen on a Premier League switch.
Apparently, United and Borussia Dortmund are ‘poles apart’ in their valuations of Sancho, with the German outfit demanding ‘in excess of £100million’ to part with the Englishman.
United remain the ‘strong favourites’ to sign Sancho, though they believe Dortmund’s valuation doesn’t sufficiently reflect the cost of the fallout due to the coronavirus pandemic. Simply put, in a normal window, the German club could demand a higher fee – though money is tight for everyone this summer.
What’s concerning is that the report says Dortmund’s valuation must be cut ‘substantially’ if a deal is to be reached this summer, with United yet to make an official approach.
What’s interesting is that Dortmund told the German stock market that playing games behind closed doors will lead to a loss of £41million for them, meaning they may well need to cash in at a lower price to simply stay afloat.
Either way, Dortmund are set to profit heavily on a man they paid just £8million for back in 2017. The story also claims that Jude Bellingham, who has also been linked with United, could play a ‘key role’ in the Sancho saga.
This could be posturing from United, as they know Sancho has just two years left on his current deal and his value could be greatly reduced if he’s allowed to enter the final year of his contract.
In the end, I’d like to think that some sort of middle-ground will be reached, though it is disheartening in a way. United failed to back Jose Mourinho after he achieved an unlikely second-place finish, I just hope lightning isn’t about to strike twice in that regard…
Right now, I’m still choosing to remain hopeful, but let’s just see how this one plays out.
